Samantha Speaks in Winnipeg (and South Africa!)

Before heading to the Worlds in South Africa, Samantha shares her experience at last weekend's National Public Speaking Competition.

This past weekend I had a fantastic and memorable experience at the National Public Speaking Competition in Winnipeg. I have been lucky enough to participate in five public speaking tournaments, and this weekend had the same level of learning, challenge and fun as the others.

The amount that I learn from these competitions is always amazing. The level of competition is extremely high, and it is both eye-opening and inspirational to see what other high school students are capable of. Simply soaking in the breadth of knowledge from persuasive speeches and debating rounds is a wonderful way to learn about world issues. From drones to traffic to antibiotic resistance to the unique needs of introverts, competitors passionately outline the problems in our world and galvanize everyone to take action. And, of course, the skills I practise at every competition will be very useful in the future. These skills include the ability to speak confidently, to formulate arguments, to work with others under pressure, and to connect with and persuade an audience.

But it’s not all about the competition! All of the competitors have fun getting to know one another as well. Various social events, such as tours, meals, and even waiting for rounds to begin are opportunities for competitors to socialize. Every year I am struck by just how friendly and welcoming everyone is, and I really feel a sense of community. Even after only a few days, we make friends and have memorable experiences we can share long after the competition is over.

I am so very grateful to have been given the opportunity to go to these public speaking tournaments. I sincerely thank my coach, Ms. Tracey Lee, for helping me every single step of the way.

Samantha S. placed 8th in the country at both persuasive speaking and interpretive reading at this tournament. She had already qualified for the 12-student Canadian team that will compete next month at the Worlds Individuals Public Speaking and Debate Championships at Clifton School in Durban, South Africa. Way to go, Samantha!
