Primary PE Teacher - Gymnastics Specialization (50%) and Afterschool Care Coordinator (50%)

Reports To: Head of Junior School

Job Summary
The Afterschool Care Coordinator will primarily be responsible for the provision of care to young students after classes. This will involve leading a team of teenaged student-assistants and developing activities to stimulate inclusiveness and engagement among students.

The Primary Classroom & PE Support position aims to assess students' needs, set goals, and formulate plans of action for achievement, improvement and the provision of progression feedback related to physical activity.

Job Duties
  • Maintain a safe, clean, welcoming, and positive learning environment
  • Monitor the safety of students and address any issues relating to harassment, bullying, or discrimination
  • Develop daily activity plans to enhance student levels of engagement and after school care, focusing on but not limited to:
    • Plan and administer all activities & games for children attending ASC
    • Plan, order and distribute snacks for children attending ASC
  • Manage all ASC staff and volunteers
    • Recruit and train senior school students as staff and volunteers for ASC supervision
    • Schedule staff and volunteers as needed
    • Track staff hours and submit to payroll
    • Maintain daily records of students attending ASC and submit to accounts receivable
    • Janitorial duties, as issues arise
  • Review and abide by approved P.E. curricula, focusing on but not limited to:
    • Gymnastics
    • Fundamental Movement
    • Swim
    • Run-Jump-Throw
  • Actively participate with students in playground games and distance running up to 2km
  • Gain and maintain students’ attention
  • Assess needs, set goals, and formulate plans of action for student improvement. Follow up and provide feedback on student progress
  • Address student questions, focusing on areas of greatest difficulty
  • Collaborate with other teachers, parents, and school administration to address individual student issues or areas of concern
  • Playground supervision in variable weather conditions
  • Diplomatically address parental concerns
  • Participation in the extracurricular life of the school, with a focus on building a gymnastics program within athletics
  • Willingness to work to 6:30pm daily
Job Requirements
  • Valid BC teaching certification
  • Valid First Aid or CPR Certification
  • A minimum of five years’ experience working with children aged 4-12 in a similar educational setting
  • Experience working with teenagers in a supervisory role
  • Successful completion of the National Coaching Certification Program in gymnastics
  • High flexibility with strong interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment
  • Ability to effectively interact with and relate to children in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • An extensive repertoire of games and craft activities appropriate for children aged 4-12.

Work Conditions
  • Interaction with students, parents, teachers and school administration
  • Extended periods of standing, lifting up to 25kg, and other physically demanding conditions
  • Working indoors and outdoors as required, in all seasons
