Feeling energized and ready to go after our Winter Break, JK-7 students have kicked off 2021 (literally and figuratively!) in their PE classes.
Over the past few weeks, student-athletes have worked on strengthening their physical literacy and movement skills on the field and in the gym. Whether they've been learning proper lay-up technique on the basketball court, practicing new footwork by skipping, or engaging in a rousing game of kickball, students have been enjoying every minute of PE classes.
During afternoon homeroom, intermediate basketball intramurals (grades 5-7) have quickly become a highlight of the week, as each house competes in a 3 versus 3 tournament within their cohort. Students have especially loved their new shirts for competition, looking sharp and standing out on campus in their house colours. These opportunities have brought back a sense of normalcy as well as school spirit. Stay tuned as we reveal each cohort’s champion later this term.
As the first months of the New Year are associated with resolutions about leading a healthy and active lifestyle, we have again launched our annual Healthy Living Month, with Nurse Natalie delivering fun and engaging lessons about the different foods in Canada’s Food Guide and making wise drink choices through Sip Smart! BC’s lessons. JK and K students loved making healthy faces while being introduced to various fruits and vegetables. Grade 4 students explored nutritional powerhouses such as quinoa, leeks, kefir and starfruit, and grade 6 classes calculated how many teaspoons of sugar are in their favourite drinks by learning to read food labels— and how to keep an eye out for marketing schemes.
Although this year is atypical, we are thrilled to see how much joy it brings our students to play with their peers in daily PE lessons. When puddle jumping in our muddy buddies, swinging on the monkey bars or challenging friends to a game of "Bump," we continue to give thanks that we are together, safe and happy!
