DI Teams Back From Tennessee - and Win Silver!

By Ms. Charlotte Anthony, Destination Imagination Coach

Congratulations to our five Destination Imagination (DI ) teams in grades 6–8 who travelled to Knoxville, Tennessee for the Destination Imagination Global Finals May 23-36. Teams advanced to the Global Finals after qualifying at the regional and provincial DI tournaments. The Global Finals is the largest celebration of student leadership and creativity in the world, with over 1,400 teams, 8,000 students and 17,000 attendees from 14 countries. Through adjudicated challenges and problem-solving exercises, students take risks, think quickly and strategically, develop creativity, assess strengths and challenges, and have fun!

A huge highlight was the 2nd place finish (out of 80 teams!) for our grade 8 improv team of Zara Smith, Lily Cowan, Namara Morse and Catherlin Lui. This is a huge accomplishment for them and their coach, Ms. Maria Izdebkski. Well done!

All WPGA teams performed exceptionally well at Globals and hit personal bests in one shape or form. Below are the official team results:

  • Grade 6 Scientific Team: 46th out of 90 teams
  • Grade 6 Technical Team: 28th out of 86 teams
  • Grade 8 Engineering Team: 46th out of 94 teams (placing 7th for their Instant Challenge)
  • Grade 8 Fine Arts Team: 28th out of 86 teams
  • Grade 8 Improv Team: 2nd out of 80 teams
Special thanks to Ms. Izdebski, Mr. Andrew Bendl, Mr. Sam Barnum and Mr. Patrick Spencer for coaching our teams and chaperoning the trip. Their careful guidance, unremitting patience, and humour make them perfect role models for DI.
