Participate in We Are Silent (April 30)

By Jiayi Li '19

We are exceptionally privileged to live in Canada. Our education, healthcare, and quality of life are things we often take for granted. In other parts of the world, people are not so fortunate. People are killed because of their sexual orientation, refugees look for homes after fleeing war zones, genocides destroy societies in countless countries, and women are paid unequally compared to men. There are some issues that unite people all around the world, such as climate change, the destruction of our forests and oceans, and prejudice in day-to-day lives. These issues cannot go ignored.

But, there is something that we can do to empower change.

We encourage senior school students to participate in WE ARE SILENT on Tuesday, April 30. By being silent for a day, we stand for those whose voices go unheard. We invite pledges of $5-$10, which will go to the Inland Refugee Society, an organization that provides refugee claimants in BC with basic services. Please sign up and help make this year’s WE ARE SILENT our biggest one yet.

Although we will be unable to speak for a day, our actions will speak volumes. What are you silent for?

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
