Junior School Active Learning & Homework Philosophy

By Ms. Karen Melville, Head of Skills & Interim Vice Principal, Learning, Junior School

At West Point Grey Academy, we believe that learning is a journey without endpoints, particularly in the development of skills, perspective building and critical thinking. Our inquiry-based learning model encourages students to ask questions, share ideas, problem solve, explore and collaborate. Supported by their teachers, students better understand context and concepts and build capacity for knowledge by being active participants in their own learning.

We believe that homework should be an active learning experience, i.e. demonstrate understanding through engagement, including playful practice and discussion. As much as possible, active learning should be enjoyable time with family—a parent is the child’s first teacher. This could be authentic life activities such as creating a shopping list, using money, or playing a card game or digital game.

Research also supports our belief that to consolidate learning and process concepts, a child’s brain needs time to rest and reflect. Social and executive functioning skills are developed and practised through play, exploration of the world around you, and opportunities to participate in authentic family responsibilities. To be productive at school, the mind needs breaks and changes in activity. Therefore, formal homework (school assignments) is limited and age appropriate.

To review grade activities that fit within our philosophy, please read the Junior School Homework Philosophy.

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
