Summer Swim Lessons

WPGA Summer Swim Lessons

Have your child learn to swim or improve their swim technique in a fun, safe environment, with qualified instructors in WPGA's indoor pool. WPGA offers summer swim lessons for ages 6 months to 6 years and up. Lessons run Monday to Friday, with 30-minute sessions starting at 8am and ending at 2:30pm. The cost is $115 per week. See below class descriptions.

Class Descriptions

PARENT AND CHILD LESSONS (6 months-3 years) *1:8 instructor child ratio 

Baby Wolves and Parent (6-18 months) 
  • Introduction to swimming 
  • Proper technique development
  • Play-based learning, with games, toys and songs 
  • Advice for parents on age-appropriate water play and safety 
Wolf Tots and Parent (18 months-3 years) 
  • Introduction to swimming 
  • Proper technique development
  • Play-based learning, with games, toys and songs 
  • Advice for parents on age-appropriate water play and safety 
PRESCHOOL SWIM LEVELS (3-5 years old) *1:4 instructor child ratio
IMPORTANT! Please ensure your child is registered in the class appropriate for his or her current swim ability. Children not registered in the correct class may be moved to a more suitable level. If you are unsure which class your child should join, please contact one of our swim supervisors

Wolf Cub (3-5 years)
  • New to swimming/nonswimmer
  • Introduction to swimming
  • Proper technique development
  • Breath control (blowing bubbles)
  • Introduction to submersion and front gliding
Wolf Pup (3-5 years)
  • Able to glide face in the water on the front 3-5 feet
  • Learning to glide on the front and back for longer distances
  • Developing strong flutter kick on the front and back
  • Developing proper body and head positions while gliding and kicking
  • Breath control (inhaling and exhaling while swimming)
Timber Wolf (3-5 years)
  • Able to swim 6 feet or more unassisted while gliding on the front and back
  • Able have a strong flutter kick on the front and back
  • Comfortable swimming in deep water
  • Developing roll-overs from front glide to back glide
  • Developing front crawl arms with rolling on the back
Grey Wolf (3-5 years)
  • Preliminary assessment required to register in this level
  • Able to swim a length of the pool of front crawl with proper breathing technique (back or side breathing)
  • Developing proper head and body position while swimming front crawl
  • Developing stronger endurance and speed
  • Introduction and development of three other strokes (backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly) 
SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS (Ages 6+) *1:5 instructor child ratio
 
Paw 1 (6 years +)
  • New to swimming/complete nonswimmer
  • Introduction to swimming
  • Proper technique development
  • Breath control
  • Introduction to submersion and gliding
Paw 2 (6 years +)
  • Able to glide face in the water on the front 3-5 feet
  • Learning to glide on the front and back for longer distances
  • Developing strong flutter kick on the front and back
  • Developing proper body and head positions while gliding and kicking
  • Breath control (inhaling and exhaling while swimming)
Paw 3 (6 years +)
  • Able to swim 6ft. or more unassisted while gliding on the front and the back
  • Existing strong flutter kick on the front and back
  • Comfortable in deep water
  • Developing roll-overs from front glide to back glide
  • Developing front crawl arms with rolling on the back
Paw 4 (6 years +)

Chris Read, Swim Camp Director

Chris Read is West Point Grey Academy's head swim coach and director of our summer swim lessons program. Chris has taught children and adults of all ages and abilities during his 25-year coaching career. A former varsity swimmer at the University of Calgary, Chris specialized in long-distance swimming, particularly 1500-metre freestyle, and was ranked 13th in the world in 5-kilometre freestyle.

Chris has a friendly instructional approach that emphasizes swim fundamentals, technique development, water safety, and having fun and being confident in the water. For Chris, being able to swim well is a life skill that also offers endless physical and mental benefits!
