Application Criteria

List of 6 items.

  • Junior Kindergarten Entry

To be eligible for junior kindergarten for the 2026/2027 school year, your child must be born in 2022.
  • Residency

We welcome applications from international families. For families relocating to the Vancouver area, we have specific residency requirements.

At least one parent must meet one of the following criteria. If only one parent is relocating, the parent with whom the child will live with must meet one of the following criteria:

    1) Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident: The parent must be a Canadian citizen or hold permanent residency status in Canada.
    OR
    2) Valid Work Permit or Official Duties: The parent must possess either a valid work permit or be in Canada for official duties that allow them to reside in the country.

For families in the process of securing permanent residency or a work permit, please ensure these documents are finalized and in place in the event an offer is made. When a candidate is being considered for enrolment, your permanent residency or work permit must be valid and current at the time the offer is extended.
  • Assessments

All in-house designed assessments and group activities will be conducted in person. Due to the important nature of these group observations, virtual assessments will not be available. In the event of illness on the scheduled assessment day, an alternate in-person assessment will be considered.

View the assessment dates here to assist with your planning. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview.
  • Complete Application & Supporting Documentation

Your application will only be considered when all supporting documents have been received. Please ensure you upload all necessary supporting documents by the application deadline (2025-2026 midterm and June 2026 report cards can be uploaded upon receipt).

In fairness to all applicants, only the requested documents will be reviewed. Kindly refrain from sending or uploading items not mentioned on the checklist, such as reference letters, certificates, videos or photos.
  • English Proficiency

To be considered for enrolment, applicants must be proficient in English. Proficiency is demonstrated through report cards and our in-house designed assessments. Please note we do not offer ELL or EAL programs.
  • Length of Application Answers

You might notice some fields allow up to 4,000 characters—that's a system feature. However, our questions are designed for answers of 1,200 characters or fewer (200-300 words). This helps us review all applications efficiently and fairly, as we'll be focusing on the first 1,200 characters of each answer.

Post-Application Process

Shortlisting
Given the high number of applicants, we conduct a shortlisting process. This is not a reflection of a child's capabilities or a family’s potential for being part of the WPGA community. Throughout the process we consider how each family aligns with our values, the current cohort of students, and how we can best support the applicant and their family.

Assessments
All in-house designed assessments and group activities will be conducted in person. Due to the important nature of these group observations virtual assessments will not be available. See below the assessment schedule.

Other Admission Information

List of 9 items.

  • Do you recommend families work with an agent or educational consultant?

We do not advise families to use educational consultants or agents for the admissions process. Because the process is reviewed and updated annually, information from agents and consultants can be outdated, leading to misinformation about current requirements and procedures. We prefer to work directly with applicant families to build a better relationship.

If you have questions or need more information about any aspect of the admissions process, please contact the Enrolment Office directly, and we will be happy to assist you. Please note that any communication regarding the status of a candidate or their application is conducted directly with the parent(s) or legal guardians, not through a third party.
  • How competitive is it to enrol in West Point Grey Academy?

We are pleased that so many families feel that WPGA would be a good match for their family. This means that we receive far more applications each year than there are spaces available. Also, some grades are not entry years, which limits our opportunity to enrol students, and we prioritize enrolment for siblings of current students. Although there are limited spaces, we do hope families who would like to join our WPGA community submit an application for consideration.

For all families who apply to WPGA, we are committed to an admission process that is welcoming, fair and inclusive. We respect your interest in our school and are committed to ensuring your experience with WPGA is positive and supportive. We abide by the NAIS Principles of Good Practice and the AISAP Ethical Behavior and Best Practices for Admission Professionals.
  • Does WPGA offer scholarships?

We offer three grade 8 entrance scholarships ($1,996 each) as well as scholarships to Indigenous students. For information, click here.
  • Does the school offer financial assistance?

Yes. For information and to apply for financial assistance, click here.
  • Does the school provide before or afterschool care programs?

Our afterschool care program (kindergarten–grade 5) is Monday to Friday, 3pm–5:30pm, for an additional fee. Capacity is limited and registration is by term (no drop-ins; first come, first served).
  • Does the school provide a bus service?

WPGA has a morning bus service, contingent on ridership, for an additional fee. The bus currently picks up students at several locations in Vancouver and Richmond; locations are subject to change each year. The bus arrives at the school gym at 8:05am.
  • I'd like to make a donation to WPGA. Can I give to the school during the application/enrolment process?

Our Enrolment Office has a no-gifts policy. We respect the gesture of appreciation; however, we do not accept donations/gifts of any kind from prospective families.
  • Does the school accept students for short-term visits?

No, we do not accept students for short-term visits.
  • Does the school have nurses on site?

We have a nursing team whose office is open to all students during the school day. Our nurses also oversee regular childhood vaccinations and teach sexual health courses with our counselling team.

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
