Student Enrichment

Service

Service is a key part of our mission. Students engage in over 60 local and global initiatives each year, supporting organizations including BC Children's Hospital, Covenant House, and Terry Fox Foundation. Senior school students also take part in global service initiatives, such as recent trips to Guatemala and Peru. These experiences foster compassionate, informed citizens who understand the importance of giving back to their local and global communities. At WPGA, students grow personally and contribute meaningfully, for a life of impact and purpose.
JUNIOR SCHOOL SERVICE

Community Service in the Junior School is a year-long club that meets weekly to discuss, plan, and learn about important local and global causes. These initiatives are largely student-led and include meaningful opportunities for leadership, education, and, at times, fundraising.

Grades 6 and 7 students take an active role in planning events, promoting initiatives through schoolwide announcements and articles in the school newsletter, The Howl, and creating age-appropriate presentations to share with students from junior kindergarten to grade 7. Students have led presentations for Pink Shirt Day, Black Excellence Day, and Yo Bro Yo Girl, to name a few.

They also participate in off-campus experiences that deepen their experiential learning. Visits have included the Downtown Eastside, where students distributed apple crisps they prepared themselves, as well as trips to Hogan’s Alley and Food Stash.

Through these experiences, students develop empathy, understand the importance of giving back, and learn to take initiative in contributing positively to their communities.

SENIOR SCHOOL SERVICE

At WPGA, service is a core part of the high school experience. Our robust Service Council leads numerous student-facilitated fundraisers and donation drives every year, such as for Lower Mainland Children's Bureau, Covenant House, Carnegie Community Centre, Vancouver Food Bank, and local food pantries. Our blood donors service team also coordinates blood donation trips to Canadian Blood Services several times a year.

In 2024-2025, over 180 students enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, an international program that fosters life skills, a service mindset, and an adventurous spirit.

Senior students may also serve globally, such as Spring Break trips to Guatemala in partnership with Project Somos, and summer visits to Peru to bring friendship and language learning to the children of the Hogar de Gina Home.

RECENT SERVICE INITIATIVES

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
