Spread the Holiday Cheer with Ray-Cam Cooperative!
By Jiayi Li ’20, Service Council
For most of us, the holidays are a time for celebrating, for family, for mountains of food and for exchanging gifts. Yet it is also a time of need for many families. This is especially true in the Vancouver neighbourhood on East Hastings Street near Clark Drive, a very low income area. Ray-Cam Cooperative, a community centre in the Downtown Eastside, provides access to family support services, daycare, out-of-school care, and a variety of recreational, social and educational programming to those in need.
This holiday, WPGA will be contributing to Ray-Cam’s annual Spread the Cheer Campaign, which supports community members during the holidays with access to gifts/toys, toiletries, baby needs, and non-perishable food. Last holiday season, through generous donations, Ray-Cam supported 144 families while sustaining their regular youth and family programming. You can contribute, too!
During WPGA’s 10 Days of Service initiative, Service Council will organize a drive for Ray-Cam’s Spread the Cheer Campaign. There will be four boxes in the senior lobby where you can drop off gifts and necessities. Boxes are categorized into toiletries, baby needs, gifts/toys, and non-perishable food. If you would like to make someone’s day this holiday season, please deliver these items from December 9-13. “Ray-Cam is not just a community centre, it’s the centre of a community.”
