Law 12 Students Explore Human Rights with Visiting Scholars

By Ms. Jenise Boland, Social Studies Teacher

As part of WPGA’s two-week long UK University Fair, Ms. Boland’s Law 12 students had the unique opportunity to engage with guest scholars from leading institutions, including Professors Sue Prince of the University of Exeter,  Dr. Colin Luoma from Brunel University, Rory O’Connell from Ulster University, and Hannah Coburn from the University of South Wales (pictured).

The session focused on human rights, comparing the European Convention on Human Rights with Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In preparation for the upcoming Bernard Chernos Essay Contest, students explored pressing legal questions, such as the right to privacy, freedom of expression, and whether jurors in Canada should be permitted to use social media during trials. These thought-provoking discussions challenged students to think critically about how legal protections evolve in an increasingly digital world.

Beyond the legal insights, this visit also introduced students to the academic pathways available at UK universities, highlighting opportunities to study law abroad. Engaging directly with professors and admission representatives allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of international legal systems and consider how they might pursue their own studies in the field.

We are grateful to our visiting scholars for sharing their expertise and inspiring the next generation of legal minds at WPGA!
