Science 8 Enrichment Program a Resounding Success

By Mr. Ralph Huygens, Assistant Head of Senior School

This year, our Science 8 Enrichment Program brought together grade 8 students and grades 11/12 students for a truly inspiring learning experience. Over the course of 16 sessions, over 30 grade 8 students explored key elements of the grade 9 science curriculum with the guidance from their older peers.

The program not only gave our younger students a head start academically but also fostered a supportive and collaborative learning environment. The grades 11 and 12 mentors took great pride in their roles, modelling a passion for science and sharing practical strategies for studying and managing coursework. Their enthusiasm and commitment were central to the success of the program.

In reflecting on their experience, the senior students shared that the program helped them grow as learners and leaders. They developed new ways to explain complex ideas—often through analogy—and learned the importance of empathy in teaching. Many noted that making a personal connection with their mentees was key to helping them engage with the subject matter.

The enrichment program has proven to be a meaningful and mutually beneficial initiative, and we look forward to building on its success in the years ahead.
