Last year, Michael Bai, Brian Lin and Race Li, now in grade 7, collaborated to build a mini library on the path to the junior school playground. Their hard work and creativity is evident in the design and function of this little book stop, which is intended for children’s books. The perfect stop for students who love to read or are looking for their next great story, the library features colours from the butterfly garden, making it look right at home in the space.
We collectively decided to name it Luna’s Little Library after our school mascot. Luna has always been a symbol of our community spirit, and it felt fitting to connect our shared love of reading with someone so meaningful to our school identity.
Reading for pleasure is one of the most important ways children grow as learners. Research consistently shows that when students read simply for enjoyment, they build stronger vocabulary, deeper comprehension skills, and greater empathy for others. More importantly, they develop a lifelong habit of turning to books not only for knowledge, but also for comfort, joy, and inspiration.
Everyone is welcome to take a children’s book to enjoy, and when you’re ready, you can return it or even add another book for someone else to read. Thanks to Michael, Brian and Race, Luna’s Little Library is sure to inspire readers for years to come.
Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
