Sustainability Club Urges Responsible Recycling

By the JS Sustainability Club

We are a group of grade 3 and 4 students committed to helping the environment. We are the sustainability leaders. We do garbage audits around the school and we want you to learn how to sort garbage properly. When we do an audit first, we go from class to class and take pictures of how the garbage is after lunchtime. Next, we record what classes have sorted well and what classes need improvement. Then we sort the garbage, compost and recycling into the correct bins. Help us save the environment by sorting your waste properly.

Doing these audits is important because every piece of waste that ends up in the wrong bin has a big impact. We learned that when recycling gets mixed with garbage, it can’t be reused. When compostable items end up in the landfill, they create harmful gases. By helping our school sort waste correctly, we are protecting our planet, keeping our school cleaner, and building good habits that will last a lifetime. Together, we can make a real difference and create a greener future for everyone!

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
