New senior club Arts Reachout is helping to spread joy through song, and last weekend spread festive cheer at Marpole Place's Holly Tea.

Back in September, a group of senior school students were inspired by the remarkable HealthArts Society, an organization that sends professional musicians to perform at retirement homes. Voilá—Arts Reachout was born.
The Arts Reachout mission is to make a difference in the community by using music—something we all love—to bring joy to someone's day. And this past Saturday, we did just that, performing at the Holly Tea at Marpole Place Neighbourhood House. Marpole Place was an incredible experience. One memorable moment was when toddler Elijah was utterly mesmerized by our violinist, Min Jung Kim. Other highlights included Jessica Tovey's double talent for voice and violin, Robbie Tulip's beautiful piano solo, Sarah Deretic's angelic voice and Andy Kim's poignant rendition of “Gabriel’s Oboe” from The Mission.
We then sang our way through favourite carols, including "Silent Night" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." Although the air was cool and the sky rather grey, the music and atmosphere warmed the room, and for everyone at the Holly Tea, it felt as though Christmas had come early.
A special thank-you to Ms. Penner-Tovey and Ms. Poole, whose support made this event possible.
Arts Reachout has more events scheduled for December, including a concert December 10 at George Pearson Centre and one December 22 for the MPA Society. Check the service board for details!
Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
