Greater Vancouver Science Fair Achievements

By Ms. Kathryn Ovenell-Carter, Head of Science, Junior School, and Mr. Tom Harding, Head of Science, Senior School

From Thursday to Saturday last week, 16 talented WPGA students showcased their impressive research skills at the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair at UBC—and the results are outstanding!

Please help us congratulate Chloë (‘30), Annie (‘30), Claire (‘30), Mick (‘30), Isaac (‘30), Ronin (‘30), Willem (‘30), Joanna (‘30), Janelle (‘30), Emma (‘30), Elena (‘30), Breanna (‘29), Ann (‘26), Owen (‘26), Jayden (‘26), and Henry (‘25). Conceiving of a scientific inquiry topic, planning experiments, navigating challenges and setbacks, analyzing data and giving a thorough presentation to as many as a dozen different judges is a huge accomplishment.

There is so much to be gained from participating in science fairs. Breanna ‘29 reflects: “I was able to apply the science knowledge I had learned in class to a practical setting, which improved my understanding of the scientific process. This project also showed to me that science involves more than just facts; it also involves creativity, innovation, and thinking outside the box. Seeing other students' projects and how they approached their topics was another fantastic aspect of the experience.”

Ann ‘26 adds that “The Greater Vancouver Science Fair is an amazing opportunity not only to teach others about what you’re passionate about, but also to learn from a diverse range of projects and share your work with industry experts. It really opened my eyes to so many new possibilities within STEM and motivated me to keep exploring new ideas.”

Owen ‘26 shares that “the science fair was a great opportunity to look at what others have worked on in specific fields such as biochemistry or engineering, but it's also a great way to meet new people and develop connections. I met many great people here, so I think it's a good environment to socialize in. It also allows you to work on a specific project tailored to your interests, further developing your skills in that field.”

An extra congratulations to the following students who received special recognition at the fair:

  • Claire ‘30: BC Nature Award, “Salmon Stream Water Filtration”
  • Chloë ‘30: Bronze Medal (junior), “Do Track Spikes Really Enhance Performance?”
  • Breanna ‘29: Gold Medal (junior), “Growing Beyond Gravity: Adapting Soilless Irrigation for Space Farming with Low-Cost Stabilizers”
  • Willem ‘30 & Ronin ‘30: Gold Medal (junior), UBC Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering Award, Grand Award, “Quiet Propellers for Marine Conservation”
  • Ann ‘26: Bronze Medal (senior), “Optimizing Alkaline Electrolysis: A Comparison of Electrolyte Performance”
  • Henry ‘25: Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Scholarship Nomination, “Approaches to Autonomous Drone Flight”
  • Owen ‘26: Gold medal (senior), Grand Award, “FLARE: Optimization of Gradient Descent”
We are very excited to share that as Grand Award winners, Owen, Willem and Ronin will be heading to Fredericton, New Brunswick to represent Greater Vancouver at the Canada Wide Science Fair!

Congratulations to our young scientists, and many thanks to Mr. Liu for coaching the senior school students on their projects. The grade 7 projects were completed as part of the annual science fair in the Junior School.
