Kind Mind Tour Comes to WPGA!

By Ms. Kirsten Bowles, Junior School Counsellor

We are delighted to be enriching our CARE curriculum in November with the support and expertise of the Kelty Foundation at Children’s Hospital. All students from JK to 7 will participate in the Kind Mind program, which dovetails beautifully with our character strength theme of the month: Kindness.

While we typically think of kindness as flowing outward to others, this program focuses inward on compassionate self-awareness and care. Kind Mind helps children learn to identify, name, and manage their emotions, using the parent–child relationship as the foundation for emotional growth and wellbeing.

At a time when youth mental health challenges are on the rise, Kind Mind takes a proactive approach, equipping students and families with simple, stigma-free tools to build emotional resilience while children are young and before the onset of adolescence. Throughout November, students will participate in weekly kindness challenges and social-emotional activities at school that spark meaningful conversations and activities at home. Each student will also bring home Kind Mind materials, with activities and resources, designed to connect caregivers with local mental health resources.

Parent Workshop Nov. 25, 6:30-7:30pm
We invite all JK-7 parents to a special presentation on “Managing Big Emotions,” led by the experts at the Kelty Foundation, on Tuesday, November 25, 6:30-7:30pm. This virtual workshop complements the content of the Kind Mind curriculum and further equips parents to support their child’s mental health. More details and a Zoom link will be provided closer to the date.

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
