Mindful Technology Use in the Junior School

By the Junior School Leadership Team

At our recent Curriculum Night, you will have heard about our school’s focus on reducing tech use in the hallways—not just for students but for all of us as a school community. We have intentionally selected technology tools to enhance learning in the classroom, and we are dedicated to fostering strong digital citizenship skills among all students. While using technology effectively is a life skill, it is also very important to know when not to be on a device.

This year, we are implementing technology-free hallways for everyone: students, teachers and families alike. This includes before and after school. We are modelling what respectful and mindful device use looks like. When students see that phones are away and conversations are face-to-face, they are reminded of the values we want to strengthen and reinforce, inside and outside of school.

With this in mind, we ask for your support. Please limit your device use to outside of the buildings during school hours. This includes arrival times, dismissal times, and other times you are inside the Junior School.

Looking ahead to our Progress and Goal Sharing Conferences and other school events, we request that families plan for non-tech activities for younger siblings who may be waiting. Consider bringing along a book, a sketchpad, a card game, colouring pages, and markers or pencil crayons.

Let’s work together to keep our learning spaces focused and calm by making intentional choices about technology. Thank you for partnering with us to model healthy habits and create an even more supportive school environment.

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
