Grade 6/7 Students Support MOM Hamper Project

By Mr. Mark Wong, Athletics Director, Junior School

This year, the Community Leaders Club, guided by Ms. Corcoran and Mr. Lee, is stepping up in a big way. Through their annual Loonie Sale, students are working not only to build school spirit and leadership skills but also to support families in our wider community.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale have gone towards purchasing 100 basketballs for MOM: Moms Offering More, an annual initiative dedicated to helping vulnerable and low-income families connected to Britannia Elementary, Seymour Elementary and other city schools. Each year, this program assembles 100 holiday hampers, each valued at approximately $750, with $500 in gift cards along with toys, essentials, and special items that help make the season brighter.

On Sunday, November 30, many families in the community, including several from WPGA, gathered at the newly renovated Landing Youth Centre to help assemble the hampers. (Click here for a short video recapping the fun day.) This hands-on support reflects the spirit of community partnership that makes initiatives like MOM possible.

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
