Applying Math Concepts to Restaurant Modelling

By Ms. Tessa Burnside, Grade 4 Teacher

Our grade 4 students are embarking on an exciting crosscurricular project that combines math, creativity, and descriptive writing. As part of our multiplication unit, students are designing their very own restaurants, using mathematical strategies to plan floor layouts, build menus, calculate costs, and take customer orders.

Alongside this hands-on math application, students are also crafting restaurant reviews that highlight vivid vocabulary and strong descriptive language, connecting their learning to our Language Arts curriculum. This project not only strengthens key skills but also invites students to imagine, create, and bring their mathematical ideas to life.

Here are some quotes from various students who are excited to share their perspectives on the project:
  • This multiplication project has been really fun!
  • Designing our own restaurants feels exciting, and we love having a chance to be creative.
  • We get to make our own layouts, plan table designs, and calculate how many people can fit in our restaurant at one time.
  • We even get to “hire” our waiters and staff and decide how much they get paid an hour!
  • With our menus, floor plans, and covers, there are so many ways to show our ideas and imagination.
  • It’s a cool way to practice mathematical thinking in a different way!
