Outdoor Education Guides, Senior School (Ongoing)

Position Summary  
Our outdoor education (OE) guides are skilled, qualified outdoor professionals who work with senior school (grades 8-12) students on a casual basis for 3-5 day excursions throughout the school year (September-June). Guides work with students in grade level groups and specialty OE programs on OE wilderness trips. Individuals will be required to supervise student groups on out-trips while camping in tents at designated campsites, backcountry sites or occasionally in cabins or lodges for the duration of the trip, including travel time and overnights. Trips include frontcountry and backcountry destinations.
Duties & Responsibilities 
  • Attend pre-trip and staff training meetings
  • Supervise groups of students (ratio typically not more than 1:10)
  • Attend to the planned programming schedule for specific outdoor education trip
  • Provide care, including emotional wellbeing, to students while on out trip
  • Ensure students are engaging in safe activities during programming and free time
  • Supervise and assist with student meal prep and clean-up
  • Provide support to Lead/Co-Guide
  • Evaluate procedures of any third parties providing programming and ensure activities and equipment are safe (as a “prudent parent”)
  • Communicate with trip leader/Head of Outdoor Education
  • Complete written field guide and take notes on activities, specifically any injuries, accidents or incidents and observations of student participants
Position Qualifications 
  • Extensive outdoor skills and experience in leading programs in hiking, kayaking and/or winter backcountry travel
  • A teaching degree and/or experience working with youth/adolescents
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills 
  • Sound judgement and decision-making skills
  • Standard First Aid
 Preference will be given to candidates who have any of the following:
  • BC Drivers License Class 4
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Industry standard qualifications and training in outdoor skills related to the specific trip (e.g. ACMG, SKGABC AOG or higher)
