Dr. Mahesh Nagarajan Visits Math 9/10

By Mr. Bruce Ito, Head of Math

On February 28, Math 9/10 hosted Dr. Mahesh Nagarajan, a reknowned mathematics professor at UBC Sauder School of Business.

Dr. Nagarajan's research focuses on operations and logistics, supply management, and applied game theory. In his session at WPGA, students investigated combinatorial problems involving moving chess pieces on different sizes on game boards and were challenged to support their initial suppositions. Dr. Nagarajan provided concrete examples of where applied math was used in past network problems such as a travelling salesman and more recently in apps such as google trips. He emphasized the need for multiple approaches to solve intriguing questions and left us with this to ponder:

Consider the sum of numbers below for any positive integer N greater than 1. Can we show this sum is never an integer?

1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 + . . . + 1/n
