Debaters at Senior Nationals and Team Canada Tryouts

By Ms. Tracey Lee, Debate Coach

Senior debaters Emma Blake '18 and Tiffany Chang '18 capped off their high school debating experience with strong performances at the Senior Nationals Debating Championships in St. John's, Newfoundland in April. The four-day competition included the top 64 teams from across Canada.

Emma and Tiffany just missed advancing to the break rounds but finished the tournament 10th overall. Congratulations to them and to teammates Vivian Zhang '19 and Emily Hardy '19, who placed in the top half of the field; as grade 11 students, they have another shot at nationals next year.
Vivian stayed in Newfoundland to represent BC at the national team tryouts, held immediately after the championships. This event welcomes the top grades 10-11 students from across the country to compete for a spot on the national team that represents Canada at the World Schools Debate Championship. After an intense three days of debate, interviews and workshops, we were pleased to learn that Vivian has been selected to the 2019 national team. Vivian is the 13th WPGA student selected to the national team in the past 10 years.

Well done, Vivian, Emma, Tiffany and Emily!
