This year’s Whistler Training Camp for the cross country and swim teams began August 20, a very smoky Sunday, when we gathered at Tantalus Lodge, our home for the next five days. The following week felt like it flew by as we participated in a memorable mix of intense workouts, a beautiful hike, free time spent with friends, and lots of team bonding.
The swim team participated in four swims in Alta Lake, where they combatted the frigid water temperature and intense workouts with wetsuits and grit.
As for the cross country runners, the team took part in four workouts at various locations around Whistler. The various workouts were tough and included intervals, hills and endurance runs.
As a whole group, we took on the challenging Blackcomb Ascent trail, where some raced against the clock to win prizes while others took it slower and enjoyed the scenic views.
Throughout the week, teams also engaged in two exciting team-building activities that brought us closer together. The first, Predator versus Prey, sent different teams of students into Whistler Village. Sporting colourful outfits, water guns, and face paint, teams competed in an exhilarating game to collect the most "lives” and not lose your own.
The second activity was a team barbecue, which due to the weather was held at Tantalus Lodge. Here, all team members had the chance to strengthen bonds through beach volleyball matches, tennis, and some great food grilled up by the coaches. And, of course, activities included the infamous annual Mountain Dew Mile Challenge, which we are still nauseous from!
We offer huge congratulations to both the swim and cross country teams for their outstanding performances during this training camp. And, just as huge of a thank-you goes out to our dedicated teachers and coaches for all their time spent organizing and leading such a memorable experience!
