WPGA Goes Global with The Economist Topical Talk Festival

By Mr. Josh Hatt, Critical Thinking & Communication Teacher

Students in our Grade 8 Critical Thinking & Communication Course, which is part of our signature Global Discourse and Reasoning Program, have been stepping onto a truly international stage this term through The Economist Educational Foundation’s Topical Talk Festival, a global program that connects thousands of young people through moderated online discussion, live lessons from The Economist, and opportunities for recognition through thoughtful contributions.

And here’s the brag-worthy part: our students are currently ranked 7th in the world (out of 155+ schools across 25 countries), and 2nd and 3rd in the Americas!

Students earn stars by contributing to the Festival Hub and participating in weekly competitions — and those stars move schools up the global leaderboards. A special shout-out to Claire Keen '27, who placed 1st in the world in the first week’s competition.

What does it look like in the classroom?

Each week, students explore a current news topic through Topical Talk lessons, then take the conversation online with peers around the world. On the Festival Student Hub, they can:
  • discuss and debate in writing with students globally
  • take quizzes, vote in polls, and enter weekly competitions
  • ask questions and receive answers from topic experts
It’s a powerful reminder that “student voice” is more than a slogan: it’s a habit of listening carefully, thinking critically, and sharing ideas with clarity and care on a world stage.

Amuse-bouche: Try a Topical Talk Prompt at Home

One type of debate students tackle connects directly to real headlines and big values questions.

Sample topic: Technology in sport

Should sporting traditions be protected, even if technology can do a better job?

Three quick dinner-table follow-ups:
  1. What’s one example of technology that makes sport more fair?
  2. What’s one example that makes sport less fun to watch?
  3. If you were the decision maker, what would you prioritize: fairness, experience, or safety—and why?
