A Community Service Year in Review

What an incredible community service year we have had in the junior school!

At a glance, here is what happened in the 2010- 2011 school year (in chronological order):
  • Community Service mission statement was created and implemented.
  • Grades 4, 5, 6 Recycling Club collected the weekly recycling.
  • Terry Fox Run - to-date, we have raised over $97,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation as a school.
  • Grade 6/7- Service Recognition Program.
  • Going Green For Halloween - the junior school Recycling Club asked students and teachers to make or reusing a costume, instead of buying something new.
  • Kidsafe meeting with WPGA - a wish list of how WPGA can best support The Kidsafe Project was generated.
  • Grades 6 and 7 Outdoor Education shore-line clean-up - for 3 hours, these students cleaned up the shoreline of the Squamish River and the heavily-used surrounding forest trails. A large amount of garbage was collected.
  • Invisible Children - grade 7 students joined the senior school students for a special screening of the documentary “Go” in our school cafeteria. This documentary has been put together by an organization called Invisible Children.
  • WE Day Vancouver 2010 - 28 grade 7 students and four junior school teachers attended.
  • Coat/Hoodie Drive - over 600 coats and hoodies were collected at WPGA and handed out to children in Vancouver’s downtown eastside, through their elementary schools this past winter.
  • Festival of Trees for BC Children’s Hospital - WPGA won the ‘Most Child- Like Tree’ category.
  • Apple Crisp Project - grade 5 students made over 250 apple crisps and gave them to the Lookout Shelter.
  • Loonie Sale - over $2,900.00 was raised for Kidsafe covering transportation, rink rental, gift bags, and lunch for 250-300 children at their annual skating party.
  • BCSPCA Supply Dive - over 25 boxes of supplies were collected and given to the BCSPCA.
  • Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society received a cheque for $500.00 and Raincoast Conservation Society received a cheque for $372.23 from the Recycling Club. This money was raised from last year’s deposits on juice containers.
  • Dress Red Day raised $996.28 for BC Children’s Hospital.
  • Response to the earthquake in Japan - writing Hope Letters to children in Japan and holding a bake sale for the Canadian Red Cross’ Japan earthquake/Asia-Pacific tsunami effort ($1700.00 was raised from this sale).
  • In celebration of Earth Day, WPGA held a month long celebration, called Earth Month.
  • Bannock Sale in celebration of Aboriginal Day - the funds raised from this sale went towards a social responsibility initiative which Macdonald Elementary (our sister school) started called 'Bannock for Books'.
  • Jeans Day raised $1,832.75 for BC Children’s Hospital.
  • Pre-kindergarten African Market Day - all items sold at this market raised funds for www.imagine1day.org.
  • Grade 1 craft sale for the Baphumelele Educare Centre in South Africa.
  • WPGA ChildRun team ran for BC Children’s Hospital.
  • Kindergarten card sale for the World Wildlife Fund and Raincoast Conservation Foundation.
  • Sport equipment drive for Kidsafe.
  • End of year school supply drive for Kidsafe.
  • The grade 5 entrepreneurial fair raised $1,228 for Kidsafe.
