By Mme U. Diem, Head of Modern Languages On May 4, grade 10 student Andy K. represented WPGA at
Art Oratoire, the B.C. and Yukon Provincial French Public Speaking Competition, at SFU Surrey. Almost 300 students participated in the event, organized by Canadian Parents for French.
Andy competed in the Core French category with seven other contestants. His speech, "Bénéfices de parler plusieurs langues," won him the gold medal! Andy then competed the very next day at the 2013 B.C. "Chinese Bridge" Mandarin Speech Contest, hosted by the Confucius Institute, where he competed against 30 students in the grades 8-10 nonheritage group. His speech, "Me and China," won him second place.
These awards are the latest in a string of linguistic achievements for Andy. As you may recall from an
earlier issue of the Howl, Andy took home silver at the 25th Annual British Columbia Japanese Speech Contest in March. In November, Andy placed third at the 5th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students in Kunming, Yunnan province, China, and was awarded a six-month scholarship to a Chinese university.
Editor's note: Andy would like to thank Mme Diem and M. Peltier for all their help in coaching him for Art Oratoire.
