Instilling good health habits from a young age is important. Next week's Healthy Living Week in the Junior School aims to do just that!

At WPGA, we are very proud of the variety of physical activities and health education lessons we offer our students, both in and out of class. Our health focus is evident on our fields, track, pool, primary gym, playgrounds and classrooms, even on rainy days!

Our Healthy School Committee of teachers, nurses and counsellors is dedicated to improving our health focus and has planned great activities for our Healthy Living Week, which runs January 20 to 24. This year's Healthy Living Week themes are "Dance 4 Health" and "Eat 4 Health." For example, during PE classes, grades 3-7 students will each sample a different dance genre, including folk, jazz, hip hop, line dance, footloose, street jazz and Latin funk. Dance teachers include Boogaloo AcademyGustavo Latin Funk and WPGA teachers Linda Elliott, Lisa Denholm, Casson Brown-Locke, Heather Thompson and Krista Scaligine.

Primary children and teachers will also receive movement and music ideas for activity breaks. Nurse Wagner, Chef Davis and grade 7 volunteers will provide healthy snacks and will lead activities to promote healthy living at school and at home. Concepts of serving sizes, fruit and vegetable servings, exercise ideas, sugar and caffeine usage will be introduced.

We invite parents to engage in discussions with their children about making positive lifestyle choices, including balanced eating and daily physical activity. We also encourage parents to demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices and to be active with their kids.

Aim to make HEALTH--physical, mental, social and emotional--part of your family discussions.

See you early Monday morning for apples and dancing in the junior school lobby!

Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
