Upcoming Service Initiatives

By Emily H., Grade 11

This fall Service Council have tons of new initiatives for students to get involved. Our theme this year—connectivity—aligns with our school’s 2017–2018 theme of inclusion; our aim is to foster emotional connections to service. One of the ways we will do this is to introduce more outreach outings to Oppenheimer Park, where we offer Downtown Eastside residents homemade sandwiches as well as fruit, cookies, water and warm socks. We believe our Oppenheimer Park trips are among the most valuable service projects we do, as participants have the opportunity to see the project from start to finish.

We also look forward to continuing to work with Covenant House through Thank-a-Thons and Sleep Out Vancouver. Coming up even sooner is the We Scare Hunger campaign: starting October 20, we invite students to bring in canned goods from the list of needed items and drop off in the bins in the senior lobby. All donations go to the Vancouver Food Bank. (If you wish to make a significant donation, ask for canned items rather than candy when trick or treating on Halloween!)

I hope to see everyone at service meetings and I can’t wait to see all the canned goods in the senior lobby. Good luck with the school year, everyone!

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
