Debaters at McGill University

By Ms. Tracey Lee, Debate and Model UN Coach

Last weekend WPGA debaters travelled to Montreal to compete at the 59th annual McGill High School Debate Championships, one of Canada’s oldest university debating unions. With over 200 top student debaters from across the country, the competition was fierce. Our young team was up to the challenge, however, with Annushka Agarwal ’22 and Vincent Gao ’22 advancing to the junior finals. In a heated debate about legal liability, these two intrepid speakers argued their way into 2nd place, with Annushka placing 4th junior speaker overall and Vincent right behind in 5th. Teammate Michel Collet '22 placed 10th overall to join the top 10 speaker ranking.

Not to be outshone, Alison Lee '20 and Elena Wang '20 impressed in the senior division, placing 3rd overall in preliminary rounds and advancing to the semifinals. A heartbreaking decision saw them bow out in the semifinals, but their strong performances placed Alison 2nd and Elena 3rd overall in the speaker tabs.

Congratulations to team members Edison Tan ’21 and Jenna Lam ‘21, who ranked in the top 20 teams of the tournament. Adam Dawood ‘22, Jeremy Fang ’21 and Ethan Jasny ’21 also performed exceptionally well.

Many thanks to Calvin Trottier-Chi ‘15 who joined us as a chaperone.

Next stop: UBC High School Championships November 3.
