Kyle Sia-Chan, Class of 2011

To Kyle Sia-Chan ’11, respect between students and teachers is woven into the culture at WPGA, and helps set the school apart. “Having teachers who respect your voice gives you confidence to do what you want in life,” says Kyle, who attributes his best personality traits, including character and kindness, to his time at WPGA, particularly his senior school experience. “My junior school years were great, but your most recent years are the most vivid, and the senior school is where I came into my own.”

Those who know the former First Responder and Spirit Council prefect can attest to his caring qualities, and he remains good friends with many WPGA alumni. Kyle, who will enter his last year of mechanical engineering at the University of Toronto this fall, saw his peers more frequently during his work placement at FortisBC this past year. Although moving East was not without challenges, Kyle feels his first year was relatively easy, largely thanks to his AP classes at WPGA, which he says were similar in structure and content to his university coursework and exams.

Engineering wasn’t always a sure thing, however. “In grade 12, I couldn’t decide whether to enroll in engineering or in business,” Kyle recalls. “I asked several teachers for advice, and all offered their perspective. I ultimately chose engineering because I learned from my teachers and counsellors that I can obtain an MBA or MFA later, and I wanted to keep my options open.”

It was a good move, as a master in business or finance is likely what Kyle will pursue after working in the field following graduation, adding that his placements at FortisBC and Bombardier Aerospace were invaluable. As for where he’ll seek employment, he is open to location. “I’ll weigh the scope of the job first, but I would love to return to Vancouver, and would consider applying to UBC for graduate school.”

We know Kyle will succeed wherever he chooses to live, but hope that he continues to visit WPGA to share his incredible insight and expertise.
