Toppings & Topography

By Ms. Jenise Boland, Social Studies Teacher

From rice crispy mountain ranges to jello rivers, geography never tasted so good! Ms. Penner and Ms. Boland revived the WPGA’s legendary LANDSCAKES unit as the school year came to a close. The comprehensive unit of study combines research into Canada’s geopolitical regions, natural resources, and the traditional territories of Canada’s First Peoples. In addition to demonstrating competency in the skills and processes of social studies, students were tasked (with a $20 limit) to design and build a 3D representation of their region using compostable materials, with many opting to decorate - and then devour! - maps made from cake.

The results put the edible into incredible. Ms. Penner and Ms. Boland hope to share the process, competencies and benefits of this engaging unit at the International Educational Studies Conference in January 2024.

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
