WPGA’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future

As bold thinkers, we empower climate-conscious youth who contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous planet through their unique passions, skills, and innovative spirits.

Two key beliefs guide our efforts on climate and sustainability:

  1. Meaningful change begins with purposeful action.
  2. Environmental sustainability is economic sustainability.

We commit to delivering exceptional learning experiences that strengthen environmental stewardship and equip our community to explore new opportunities, solve problems, and lead for a better future.

As a community, we will continue to model and inspire sustainable practices that honour the land we learn on, the people we learn with, and the future we are shaping together.

Climate priorities and action

Our climate priorities are brought to life through efforts in three interconnected domains: Learning, Leadership, and Operations. These efforts drive change across five key focus areas — Food Service, Waste Reduction, Travel & Transportation, Energy Efficiency, and Stewardship. The priorities outlined below reflect WPGA’s current commitments, shaped by school planning and community consultation.

List of 3 items.

  • Leadership

    1. All community members learn about Indigenous knowledge systems and their importance in understanding sustainability, land stewardship, and intergenerational responsibility.

    2. Ongoing professional development and empowerment of staff to embed sustainability and climate literacy into teaching.

    3. Informed student voices help shape school policy, practices, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Learning

    1. All students learn about climate change, and the complexities and opportunities in climate economics.

    2. Outdoor learning intentionally fosters ecological awareness and student relationships with local land, watersheds, and ecosystems.

    3. Local and global partnerships connect students with real-world sustainability challenges, problem solving, and innovations.
  • Operations

    1. Model environmental stewardship through responsible energy use, waste reduction, and sustainable procurement practices during daily school life.

    2. Design school events and celebrations to include sustainable practices such as zero-waste goals, ethical sourcing, and climate-conscious travel.

    3. Reduce our ecological footprint through transparent tracking and shared accountability.

Additional Sustainability Initiatives

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
