Out of My Comfort Zone—and Onto the Set

By Adam Shen '30

When the opportunity to film a current events game show at CBC Vancouver came up on the DAs, my first instinct was to hesitate. The show focused on artificial intelligence, climate change, and the rising cost of living, asking for youths’ opinion because we would be the ones impacted. As a grade 8 student, being on a professional set felt way out of my comfort zone. However, I decided to say yes, and that decision transformed five hours of my Winter Break into an unforgettable experience!

Walking into the studio, I saw how a professional production operates, showing me how much work is done behind the scenes for a single segment to come to life. When filming began, I heard about how 99 other kids our age viewed major topics of concern in today’s world. It was a great experience and something you don’t get to be a part of everyday. I learned that even though we are all similar ages, our backgrounds lead us to very different solutions. Everyone was really passionate, and I was able to hear everyone's perspectives on the same problem. Hearing others, I also came to realize what my own thoughts and opinions were. I learned that opportunities don’t wait until you feel “ready.”

The show will be called "Hope or Nope." CBC hasn't set a launch date yet, so stay tuned!
