ISABC Robotics Scrimmage

By Mason Phelps ‘31 and Mason Sparrow ‘31

The year is 2040 and autonomous helper robots perform essential services deemed too dangerous for humans. Mission: Resilience City was the theme for this year’s ISABC Robotics Scrimmage at Southridge School where we acted as Robotics Response Engineers to design, build and program an autonomous robot that completed as many recovery tasks as possible.

I felt pretty excited and confident because me and Mason’s build was pretty resilient to most tasks. Our bot was an autonomous robot with one arm and two treads. The treads gave traction and turning ability. We also had a big mast on the ship resembling a sailing ship.

The first challenge we did was delivering food to four squares fully autonomously. We had no remote control and preset controls coded. We had to use measurements and timers to measure how long the robot would move.

The day was pretty fun with building robots and coding. We had lots of fun!

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
