MDI Highlights

By Ms. Fast, Ms. Scaligine and Ms. Bowles

In February, students in grade 4 and 6 completed the MDI (Middle Years Development Instrument), a survey administered across BC to evaluate student social-emotional health and wellbeing. This anonymous questionnaire gives students the opportunity to report about their thoughts, feelings and experiences in the school and the community. The data is reported back to the school as a grade cohort and is not individualised. The data for both grade 4 and 6 is very positive.

Here are some highlights we noted from the data collected:
  • The number of students who are thriving is high.
  • Students have adults at school and at home who believe in them and listen to them. This correlates the data collected from the Student Wellness Survey students in grades 1-7 complete each term.
  • Students have a strong sense of belonging and feel connected to their peers and the WPGA community.
  • Students believe in their academic strength.
  • Students eat a high number of meals with their families.
  • There is a general decrease in time spent on social media. This correlates with the data found in Ms. Bowles’ grade 6 and 7 CARE survey.

What surprised us:
  • Over 50% of our students participate in seven or more organized activities a week and only 3% have one or two activities.
  • Only around 50% of students read daily for fun.

These are great areas to consider as we close a fabulous year and think about opportunities in the future. Thank you so much for all you do to help our students be healthy, happy and growing in all areas.

Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
