Canadian Computing Competition

By Mr. Alfred Lu, Senior School Teacher

On Wednesday, February 18, over 20 WPGA students participated in the Canadian Computing Competition. Students began at 7:30am and continued for three hours. The University of Waterloo organizes this extremely challenging and difficult competition. Students are required to complete five coding problems. There are two divisions: Junior and Senior.

The competition pushes students to problem solve in creative and thoughtful ways, and taxes their critical thinking skills and logical processing abilities tremendously.

An example of a problem: Given a certain number of parking spaces, given a certain number of lights (each capable of illuminating a different number of spaces), and given different positioning of the lights, how many spaces are illuminated by light?

Congratulations to the (unofficial) top scores:
  • Senior: Ethan Xie, Hugo Chung, Eric Miao
  • Junior: Candice Geng, Candan Lu (Gr 7), Preston Lin
