In a world where many teens feel intense pressure to perform—academically, athletically, and socially—The Five Principles of Parenting by Aliza Pressman offers a practical, research-based framework for raising resilient, emotionally healthy young people while maintaining strong parent-child relationships. Drawing on decades of developmental science, Pressman distills parenting down to five core principles: relationship, reflection, regulation, rules, and repair. These principles help families navigate everything from everyday conflicts to big emotional moments. Practical, compassionate, and realistic for busy families, the book focuses less on “perfect parenting” and more on building strong connections and skills that support children’s well-being over time.

We will be discussing chapters 1-4 in our first meeting. Coffee, tea, and fresh pastries will be served and we will start each session with a short summary of the chapters, so we strongly encourage you to join us even if you have not read the book. We look forward to meaningful conversations about the book and our personal experiences with teenagers.

Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
