This week, WPGA proudly hosted its inaugural TEDxWest Point Grey Academy Youth event, welcoming nearly 100 audience members to hear from 18 student speakers from the Grade 8 and 9 Critical Thinking and Communciation classes. This marked an exciting milestone for our school, as it was an officially licensed TEDx event; a first for West Point Grey Academy.
The evening was a powerful celebration of student voice, courage, and thoughtful discourse. Our speakers explored a wide range of compelling topics, from the courage to be average to AI and medicine, demonstrating remarkable insight, vulnerability, and confidence. It was inspiring to witness students step onto the stage and share ideas that mattered deeply to them.
As part of the TEDx experience, participants will receive an email directly from the TED organization inviting them to provide feedback on the event. Students were also adjudicated, with feedback designed to celebrate their strengths and help them consider how they might continue to grow as speakers in the future.
This event was a meaningful and memorable addition to WPGA’s 30 year history, and a wonderful example of the talent, bravery, and thought leadership within our school community.
Since 1996, West Point Grey Academy has gratefully resided on the Jericho Lands, the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation and sə̓lílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Honoured to learn and play on these beautiful lands, we endeavour to be a leader in Indigenous education. In creating shared understanding and opportunities, we hope to help foster a more equitable society for all.
