Author Visit with Dan Santat and Neil Sharpson

By Ms. Devin St-Amour, Teacher Librarian

On March 9, our lucky students in grades 1–3 gathered in the Upper Gym for a lively and hilarious visit with award-winning author and illustrator Dan Santat and author Neil Sharpson.

The presentation was full of energy and humour. Neil had students in stitches as he performed a dramatic and very funny reading of their picture book Don't Trust Fish. His storytelling was so animated that students were rolling on the floor with laughter! Dan was just as funny, adding his own jokes and commentary as he talked about illustrating the book and bringing the characters to life.

Students were encouraged to participate throughout the presentation, eagerly responding to questions and reacting to the outrageous facts about fish that appear in the story. Dan also spoke about the importance of drawing and encouraged students to keep sketching and doodling, reminding them that creativity grows with practice.

As a special treat, the authors also shared a sneak peek of a brand new book they are working on called Help! I’m Being Eaten by a Bear, which has not yet been released. Students loved getting an early look at the story and hearing about how new books begin as ideas and grow through writing and illustration.

It was a joyful celebration of reading, storytelling, and creativity, and a memorable experience for all our young readers.
