Spring Break Reading Challenge a Huge Success!

By Ms. Devin St-Amour and Ms. Caitlin Elias, Junior School Librarians

Our Junior School Spring Break Reading Challenge was a tremendous success, and we couldn’t be more proud of our students’ enthusiasm and commitment to reading. Over the break, students across all houses came together to read an impressive 607 books—an incredible achievement that speaks to the strong reading culture within our school community.

Although Cypress ultimately read the highest number of books, the results were remarkably close across all houses, making for an exciting challenge. It was wonderful to see such widespread participation and dedication from so many students and teachers.

The challenge was designed to encourage reading over Spring Break in a fun and engaging way. Before the break, each student received a sheet of paper in their house colour, featuring paper “links.” Students were invited to read up to three books over the holiday and record the title and author of each on their links.

Upon returning to school, students brought their completed sheets back to the library, where the links were carefully cut out and connected to form vibrant reading chains. These chains are now proudly displayed in the library, serving as a visual celebration of our students’ collective reading accomplishments.

To add to the excitement, each book recorded earned students two house points, contributing to their house totals and encouraging friendly competition.

We are thrilled with the success of this new initiative and hope it continues to inspire a lifelong love of reading in our students. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this challenge such a valuable experience!
