Junior School Celebrates World Book Day

By Ms. Debbie Edge, Head of English, Junior School

Last week, our school community celebrated World Book Day, an occasion that highlights how reading serves as the vital foundation for inquiry, connection, and academic growth. Far from being a standalone event, the day’s activities encouraged students to see reading as an active tool for exploration and a primary bridge to understanding the world around them.

The "Staff Shelfie" competition invited students to engage in a unique form of character analysis, as they used visual clues from staff members' personal bookshelves to identify the reader behind the collection. Students also were invited to complete a "Guess that Quote" scavenger hunt, which required students to apply critical-thinking skills to identify significant literary voices hidden throughout the school. On the outdoor landing, the leadership team modeled the importance of reading for pleasure and purpose, demonstrating that literacy is a shared value that extends into every space of our learning environment.

In the library, students took pictures with some of  their favorite books, while in grade 5, the launch of new Literature Circles marked a transition into deeper collaborative analysis and peer-led discussion.

It was an amazing day, and we look forward to celebrating again next year!
