In a rare and inspiring opportunity for our young musicians, the West Point Grey Academymusic department is thrilled to announce an exclusive performance by world-renowned pianist Hayato Sumino.
Following his headlining appearance at the Orpheum Theatre on May 7, Sumino, widely known by his moniker "Canteen," will hold a special performance for select WPGA classes and ensembles on Friday, May 8, 10-11am at St. Helen’s Anglican Church.
A Category-Defying Talent
Hayato Sumino is widely considered a modern musical phenomenon. With tens of millions of views on YouTube, Sumino has captured a global audience by bridging the gap between traditional classical mastery and contemporary genres. His artistry seamlessly blends classical virtuosity, with masterful interpretations of the great canon; modern fusion, defined by innovative arrangements featuring pop, jazz, and animé influences; and original compositions.
Sumino’s influence on the industry was cemented in 2025 when he set a Guinness World Record for the highest ticket sales at an indoor piano recital, selling out the 18,564-capacity K-Arena Yokohama in Japan, the first classical concert ever held at the venue.
This private engagement is made possible through a collaboration with the Director of the Vancouver Recital Society. Originally organized as a field trip for the WPGA Chamber Music class, Concert Band 9, and the grade 4 classes, the invitation has been extended to include other aspiring pianists within the school community. Please contact Ms. Goddard for consideration.
