Senior School Earth Week
Our Environmental Sustainability Council recently hosted an action-packed week of festivities to celebrate our planet and promote greener living. From April 20 to 24, the Senior School was filled with sustainable events designed to educate, inspire, and make a tangible difference.
We kicked things off with a green-themed bake sale which, alongside our Thrift Bonanza proceeds, raised an impressive $519 for the David Suzuki Foundation. The momentum continued Tuesday with a high-stakes trivia battle, where students went head-to-head learning about sustainable energy, ways to improve our carbon consumption in our day to day lives, WPGA’s ongoing projects, and many more.
On Wednesday, the science lab was buzzing as students crafted their own beeswax lip balms. Melting and adding scents while learning about PFAs and cosmetics' impact on the environment. Thursday featured the week's main event, the Thrift Bonanza, where students traded and purchased pre-loved clothing, promoting a sustainable way to shop. Understanding fast fashion and promoting the idea of thrifting and rescuing.
We wrapped up the week with Go Green Day on Friday. Students decked themselves out in green and blue to honour the Earth, and the Senior School took on a mysterious vibe as we dimmed the lights through the halls to redistribute the importance of saving energy. At recess, our more adventurous students even sampled sustainable protein sources, including crickets and mealworms! Together, we aimed to emphasize a deeper respect for our environment and highlight the creative ways we can all contribute to a greener future.
Connecting Through Our Campus Clean-up
On April 30, students from all grades teamed up for a campus cleanup and scavenger hunt. Our senior students led the way, teaching younger peers where to properly dispose of waste and why keeping our shared spaces clean is a daily responsibility. Since there isn’t often crossover between the seniors and juniors, it was the perfect opportunity to connect. Between games of rock-paper-scissors and running around with the big kids, we shared plenty of laughs while teaching the younger grades about the world around them.
This is always a yearly reminder of where waste goes and what to do if you find it. While a single afternoon of cleaning may not have a massive effect on our environment, it serves as a reminder of our personal impact. We hope this event fosters lasting habits of pride and care for our campus and the environment, letting our older students inspire the next generation of environmental leaders.
