Spinning to Fitness

By Anna Cumming and Taylor Williams, Grade 7

Anna and Taylor fill us in on their favourite PE activity--spinning! Is it tough? Yes! Fun? You bet!

In PE, the grade 7 classes look forward to challenging our bodies and becoming fit while having a blast. We have recently started using the bike/spin room. In spin class, we start off in our seats, slowly accelerating until we are "climbing" hills. Hearts pounding and faces red and sweaty, we eventually reach the top of the "hill," more than ready to plateau before the next heart-pumping round.

Another one of our favourite spinning exercises is sprint repeats, in which we give it all we've got for 15 seconds, imagining we are in a track race. (We also imagine we are beating our peers across the finish line--friendly competition is a great motivator!)

While spinning, we listen to upbeat, energizing tunes. When a song begins, the whole class chimes in and sings, resulting in a chorus of laughter and joy.

In nearly every PE class, we (and Ms. Jefferson) challenge ourselves to complete the 7-Minute Workout, which features different cardio- and strength-building exercises. Then we do lots of fun stretches, which help to prevent injury.

We really enjoy spinning class and the bike room, and aspire to cycle like Ms. Ruus, the spinning master!
