On Friday November 25, the grade 5 students participated in helping a local Vancouver homeless shelter called The Lookout. We peeled hundreds of apples and learned about how homeless people live in our community. We made 243 apple crisps and enjoyed mixing the apples with cinnamon, flour, nutmeg and sugar. We sprinkled oats, butter and sugar on top for the yummy crumble. Then we piled them into pie plates, boxed them up and put them in a truck to go to the homeless shelter. We also had a chance to make holiday cards to take to the shelter. The grade 5 students had a wonderful experience doing community service for the homeless. It gave us a taste what it is like to be a less fortunate person in Vancouver. This project helped us to understand how many people are homeless and how we can help them.
