PSG - Physical Health and Education

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS:

WPGA students are enrolled in PHE from Pre-K to Grade 12 to ensure they develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to be safe, active, and healthy citizens throughout their lives. PHE is a participatory course and regular attendance and active participation are integral to success. Elite athletes training or competing at national levels who train 15 or more hours outside of school time for 7 or more months in the year may be granted a PHE exemption in grades 11 and 12.  They may connect with the Vice Principal of Learning for an application if this applies.

ATHLETICS WITHIN THE PHE PROGRAM:

Grade 8 and 9
At the grade 8 and 9 level, most teams run as extra-curricular activities with morning or after school practices and games. Students may participate in competitive sports, depending upon student interest and aptitude, on a season-by-season basis. Swim Team is the only grade 8/9 team that trains in their PHE class. In Grades 8 and 9, students choose one of two categories of PHE, depending whether they intend to compete on the swim team (Fall term only).  Students participating on the swim team are expected to make a commitment to extra-curricular practices and competitions. The swim team needs to be scheduled to accommodate pool access; please see standards below in the Athletics section.

Grades 10 - 12

Beyond grade 9, Athletics and Physical and Health Education for some sports are integrated for parts of the year.  Team practices for swim, girls’ volleyball, boys’ soccer, and basketball are scheduled within PHE class and students are assessed depending on their grade level and matching course.  Grade 10 students participating on teams that practice within a PHE 11/12 class need to select a study block (“Varsity Study”) to align with the practice time..  Students participating in team sports are also expected to make a commitment to extra-curricular practices, games and/or competitions. Students in Wilderness Pursuits complete PHE 10 as part of the WP program.

  • Learning standards related to health within the PHE Program

Health literacy is an important part of the PHE 8/9/10 curriculum. Health lessons are taught by PHE specialists with guest experts brought in to enhance and expand on some topics. In grade 10, students will complete their CPR-C certification. Grade 11 and 12 students also receive supplementary health lessons.
  • Physical and Health Education Participation Policies and Expectations

Physical and Health Education is a participatory subject area that requires regular attendance and effort for success.  If students are well enough to attend school on a given day, they are expected to attend and participate in their PHE classes. Accommodations for participation will be made at the discretion of the teacher and on a case-by-case basis. Please do not arrange outside appointments during class time.
  • WPGA PHE Strip

Appropriate PHE clothing is expected for participation in PHE classes. This includes:
    • WPGA black track suit
    • WPGA shirt
    • WPGA black shorts
    • WPGA PHE shirt
    • WPGA hoodies
    • White sport socks
    • Running shoes (two pairs—indoor and outdoor)
    • Technical wear to be prescribed by coach (in-season athletes).
When deemed appropriate by the PHE teacher, students are expected to participate even when missing their WPGA strip. Students who do not wear the appropriate WPGA strip, may receive a uniform slip, aligning with the school uniform policy. Please note, students should not be wearing strip outside of PHE class.
  • Injuries and illnesses

If students have an injury or illness that may limit their participation in PHE classes, parents should contact their child’s teacher. It is expected that students attend their PHE class and check in with their teacher unless they are physically unable to do so. For example, if a student is on crutches, they are not expected to travel down the hill to the gymnasium. An alternative location will be determined between the teacher and student. PHE teachers often make accommodations for injured students, and when possible, arrange physically active alternatives (ex. biking, completing stationary exercises, or physio exercises). If an injury or illness prevents a student from participating for more than 3 periods, a doctor’s note stating the reason and duration of the exemption is required. For injuries and illnesses that prevent a student from participating over an extended period of time, arrangements will be made between the teacher, student and parent.
