Medical Information

SCHOOL NURSES

Open 8:20am-3:30pm on school days, the Nurses Office is located in Annex (next to Junior School). The nurses can be contacted at 604-222-8750, x. 1234 or by email

School nurse Kelly Morrison, RN, supported by Sharon Janzen, RN, provides medical treatment to all students. Our nurses coordinate care plans for children with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma and severe allergies, and oversee the lice and vaccinations programs.

The nurses teach healthy living courses across grade levels; classes include nutrition, hygiene, allergy awareness, and sexual health/body science. In the Senior School, Nurse Janzen provides confidential health advice and guidance.

The school nurses are bound by the BCCNM’s (British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives) Professional Standards. The school nurses uphold and promote Responsibility and Accountability, Knowledge-Based Practice, Client-Focused Provision of Service, and Ethical Practice.

Please visit the Nurses page at WolfNet > Resources for health-related guidance, including care plans for diabetes (with diabetes medication administration form), seizure, anaphylaxis, asthma and concussions.
FLU & ILLNESS POLICY; DAILY HEALTH CHECK

WPGA Flu & Illness Policy

It is WPGA policy that students and staff DO NOT come to school if they are exhibiting any symptoms of a suspected or known communicable disease, including cold, flu or Covid. Please complete a daily health check with your child to assess if they have any listed symptoms. If you answer YES to any of the symptoms, and the symptoms are unrelated to a pre-existing condition (e.g. allergies, asthma), your child should not come to school.

To report an absence due to illness or other reason, please submit the Student Absence Form at WolfNet > Resources by 8am that day. If your child falls ill at school, the teacher will send the child to the Nurses Office. If the child has a fever or is not well enough to continue with school activities, the nurse will call the parent to pick up the child. Please be prepared to pick up your child within 30 minutes.

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

With parent/guardian permission on the Medication Administration form (part of school start-up forms), our nurses can provide over-the-counter medications to students when required. If you have given your child over-the-counter medications before school, please inform the Nurse in the event your child goes to the Nurses Office that day. If your child brings home an ice pack or tensor bandage, please return them to the school the next day.

STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATION

The Nurses Office maintains health information on all students enrolled at WPGA. Information must be updated annually by parents (student forms submitted in June), including consent to administer Tylenol and Advil. Medical alert forms and medication administration forms are required and mandated by the Ministry of Education for students with serious or life threatening medical conditions.

NUT POLICY & ANAPHYLAXIS PROTOCOL

WPGA is a nut-aware school. Peanuts and other nuts are common allergens most likely to cause a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). The best way to avoid anaphylaxis is through prevention of exposure. To protect our students with nut allergies, we do not serve nor sell foods or packaged products containing peanuts or other nuts, and we strongly discourage parents from packing food items containing nuts.

Classroom treats must not contain nuts. Our nurses train faculty and staff to administer epi-pens in the event of anaphylaxis. Epi-pens are located in the nurses’ office, junior/senior reception, the dining hall, and both gyms. If your child requires the use of an EpiPen or inhaler, they must bring it to school every day (including field trips).
