Emergency School Closures & Safety Protocols

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

WPGA has a Board Risk Management Committee and a Director of Operations (Jonathan Pike), who manages all aspects of emergency preparedness, including weather-related incidents, natural disasters, evacuation protocols, medical emergencies, pandemic measures, internal and external threats, and travel processes.

EMERGENCY DRILLS

WPGA has systems for fire evacuation, lockdown and earthquake. The Junior School and Senior School hold fire evacuation drills each term. The school also holds regular earthquake and lockdown drills during the year, including drop-cover-hold, shelter-in-place, and evacuation procedures.

SCHOOL CLOSURES/COMMUNICATIONS

School closures or delays are most often due to inclement weather. The school will aim to notify families and staff of a school closure or delay by 6:30am. Notifications will be posted on the following channels:
  • School website homepage (wpga.ca)
  • By school email
  • Though the Alertus App*
  • On the school’s Instagram page
*We expect all students, staff and parents to download the Alertus app to receive notifications to your mobile device in the event of an emergency. Click here for download instructions.

School closures include all cocurricular activities except by special notification. When school is closed, no students, staff or faculty will be on campus on these days with the exception of our facilities team.

CAMPUS SECURITY & VISITOR PROTOCOLS

Building Access: Exterior building doors are locked during the day for safety reasons. Students use a unique code to gain access; staff use their fob to enter. Parents and visitors must buzz in at reception (main doors in the Junior School and Senior School). Buildings are monitored by cameras and a private security company.

Visitor Protocol: Visitors to WPGA must check in at school reception upon arrival. All visitors, including service people and prospective families, are accompanied at all times by a WPGA staff member.

Smoking/Vaping: All K-12 schools in BC are tobacco and vapour free under government regulation. This ban extends to all school property 24/7, regardless if school is in session. The ban also includes parking lots, sports fields, grounds, and private vehicles parked on school property.
