Looking back, what’s a moment at WPGA that has stayed with you — one that shaped who you are today?
What I remember most from the early years is the staff. We were all new teachers, keen and energetic, and as I was also a parent (my children were both “lifers” at WPGA), I remember the camaraderie among the parent community, many of whom I have lasting relationships with. In the beginning, we had few supplies, no gym equipment, and really made do with what we had (or were resourceful in finding alternatives). We taught to 4pm; the school day was long, but there was a shared purpose among staff that made it fun and exciting to come to work—this is what resonates most.
What does the WPGA community mean to you and why?
WPGA has been my second home for 30 years. I still love coming to work, which is due, of course, to the students, supportive admin, and the close-knit community, filled with friendships.
How have you seen WPGA grow or change over the years—and what has remained the same?
We moved quickly in the early years—the school has always been focused on progression and idea sharing. Yet even as we’ve become more sophisticated, we still have a down-to-earth feel with little pretense. I attribute this to the staff hired over the years and the intentional culture of cohesion.
What’s one lesson or value from WPGA that you carry into your life beyond school?
I would say that I appreciate differences more. This school is full of different personalities and ways of expressing yourself, from students to staff and parents. Being in this accepting environment gives you great perspective on what motivates people.
As we celebrate 30 years, what’s your hope or vision for the next 30?
I’m not hopeful—I’m confident. WPGA will continue to be the best it can be. We have a strong foundation that will carry us through.
